Compare the practical differences
| Destination | Best for | Train planning | After arrival |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sintra | Palaces and gardens | CP's Sintra line serves stations including Rossio, Oriente and Entrecampos. | Choose your monument first; some sites require an onward bus or walk. Check entry times. |

| Évora | Historic streets and a full day away | CP lists Lisbon–Évora intercity services; check the departure station and return before booking. | Allow time to reach the historic centre and check the opening times of your chosen sights. |
Choose Sintra for palaces and gardens
Sintra rewards an early decision about which monument matters most to you. The train gets you to the town; the palaces are spread out and may need an additional bus or walk. Parques de Sintra’s transport guide lists routes for individual sites. Its Pena Palace visitor information explains timed entry and planning your arrival.
Choose Cascais for flexibility
Take the coastal rail line from Cais do Sodré and plan a town and waterfront day at your own pace. The CP line timetable lists the stations between Lisbon and Cascais. Confirm the current schedule and any service changes before leaving.
Choose Évora for a longer day
Évora offers a different setting in the Alentejo. Check the outbound and return options first, then choose a manageable number of sights. CP’s timetable directory includes the Lisbon–Évora route. Our Évora day-trip guide has more planning options.
Planning with mobility or access needs
Check each part of the journey separately: a train station, the onward trip and an attraction can have different access conditions. These notes are based on operator information checked on 1 November 2026; confirm the arrangements for your own journey before booking.
- Train and stations: Consult CP’s specific-needs and mobility assistance information and its list of stations with SIM assistance. CP says wheelchair and mobility scooter users must request its SIM assistance at least six hours ahead, and that the service for these users is limited to listed stations. For trains departing between 10 p.m. and 11:59 a.m., CP also requires the request by 8 p.m. the previous day. Its rules require a ticket before the assistance request for trains with compulsory seat reservations, such as Intercidades. Confirm current deadlines and eligibility for both stations, the train and your equipment directly with CP; use its assistance request form or the contact options on its guidance page.
- From the station to your destination: Identify the onward transport or walking route and confirm its access independently. In Sintra, the monument transport guide helps identify connections; contact the relevant operator about the vehicle and stops you need.
- Inside the attraction: Check the particular site and facilities you intend to visit. For Pena, Parques de Sintra’s accessibility information describes steep paths and stairs inside the palace. Its page gives conflicting information about wheelchair lift availability on the transfer, so confirm current arrangements with the venue before relying on it.
This is a planning checklist, not a certification that a route or venue will suit every visitor. Conditions and individual requirements differ.
Before you leave
- Choose one destination and confirm its outbound and return trains for your date.
- Write down the Lisbon departure station and plan the journey from the arrival station to your chosen sight.
- Check tickets, opening arrangements and, if needed, assistance for every part of the route.
Check the weather and individual attraction tickets as well; a train ticket does not include monument entry. For your days in the city, see our Lisbon first-trip guide and our independent Sintra planning story.
